Come, enter a world of mystery and free your spirit through song, dance, and community at Kirtan Beats. Rachel Dugas, Marlee-I Mystic, and Fountainetta Coleman will lead a 90-minute kirtan bumping with drum machines, bass, freestyle melodies, and live drumming.
As we sing ancient chants alongside fresh rhythms and beats, we invite you to lose yourself and find each other in the music. We will alter our consciousness with repeated mantras; entrain our body and brain with the beats; and cultivate compassion through sound and song.
A traditional "Kirtan" is a participatory concert where the division between the audience and performers dissolves through the call-and-response repetition of chants and mantras. Meditation is more than sitting in silence. As instrumentalists our meditation often comes when we are creating with our instruments and voice. This sonic meditation features the wooden tongue drum Tinka Tong by feeltone. I love the sound of this instrument. It feels ancient yet futuristic. It is perfect for getting lost in the space of the sound.
It is with great pleasure that I share the news of progress in the San Francisco birthing justice movement. Supervisor Malia Cohen and Mayor London Breed have announced a new program that will create access to doula services for low-income Black and Pacific Islander families. These families face the highest risk of poor perinatal outcomes and need support for healthy births. This program is one step toward addressing disparities and bringing justice to birthing.
Many thanks to Expecting Justice and SisterWeb for placing urgency on this issue. They have been taking action for racial equity in birth outcomes and assure the the voice of the voiceless is being heard.
Join us for the Official SisterWeb Launch Party and Conversation with author Angela Garbes ("Like A Mother") on Friday September 28th 6pm at The Women's Building in San Francisco.
Exactly one week until I get to return to the oasis of sonic rejuvenation!
